JAIPUR: The state govt has made Surya Namaskar mandatory for 10 minutes during the prayer meeting or assembly in the morning at all government and private schools across Rajasthan.
This was made official by education minister Madan Dilawar on Thursday while speaking at an event organised by the education department on the occasion of Surya Saptami.
“I have given instructions to all officials regarding this. The practice of Surya Namaskar keeps the body and mind healthy. It will be followed in all schools for 10 minutes during the prayer time,” he said.
He also reiterated a statement he made yesterday that offering ‘namaz’ or religious prayers during school hours would not be tolerated and teachers or staff who want to follow it would have to take leave with written approval in advance.
Some 1.33 crore people from across the state performed Surya Namaskar between 10.30-11am at an event organised by the education department.
A record of the event has been submitted to the World Book of Records, London, a provisional certificate for which was received on Thursday afternoon.
Addressing the media, Dilawar said that the department would act against those schools which did not participate in the programme.
“Till now, I have not received any information of anyone opposing the Surya Namaskar event. But appropriate action will be taken against those who did not participate in it,” he said.
A few Muslim organisations had appealed to the members of their community not to participate in this programme as it was against the religion.
The minister also said, “I have received messages of support from many Muslim brothers and sisters.”
