Coimbatore: A Class XII corporation girl student has made the city proud by securing a seat at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) for the online Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Data Science and Applications. And for T K Kirthana, who was among the 50-odd government higher secondary school students from Coimbatore who appeared for the qualifier exam in 2023, it’s a dream come true.
A student of the corporation girls’ higher secondary school at RS Puram, she is the first government school student from the city to qualify for the four-year online course.
“I came to know about the course when the civic body conducted an awareness programme in our school. I attended the exam in October 2023. In my first attempt, I failed in two subjects. I took the first attempt as an experience. Then I reattempted the exam in November and qualified for the course,” Kirthana told TOI.
Under the ‘Anaivarukkum IIT-Madras’ (IIT-Madras for all) initiative, school students who appeared for Class XI final exams could apply for the course, irrespective of their board, said the project head, N Hari Krishnan. “Those who qualify could join the programme after completing Class XII. The programme is open for all the people who have completed Class XII, irrespective of age and professional background.”
The programme was launched by IIT-M in 2021. “As of now, 117 government school students have qualified for the course. Coaching for the exam is provided by the IIT. Questions will be asked from the four-week course conducted by the IIT. Hence, a separate coaching isn’t required for the exam,” Krishnan said.
The four-year course will cost Rs3.51 lakh. While the state government will take care of the fee of SC/ST students from the government schools, IIT is providing a 75% concession to the students whose family income is less than Rs1 lakh and a 50% concession to the students whose family income is between Rs1 lakh and Rs5 lakh.
Students have the flexibility to take long breaks between each academic year to fulfil the financial responsibilities. “We are also providing another degree programme in electronic systems. There are plenty of job opportunities with the software and IT industries after completing these two online courses,” another official with the IIT-M said.
The next batch of IIT-M BS programme starts in May 2024. Applications are currently open. For more information, students could visit https://study.iitm.ac.in/
