Pipeline projects & monitoring help PMC save 200 MLD water Pune | Pune News – Times of India

Pune: PMC has claimed to have saved 200 million litres of water daily after undertaking measures like plugging of leakages, pipeline replacement and monitoring of valve functioning.
The civic administration draws around 1,600 MLD water from the Khadakwasla dam. Deputy CM Ajit Pawar in a meeting held in November 2023 had told PMC to initiate measures to curb water losses. Following these instructions, the state irrigation department had directed the civic administration to reduce daily water use to ensure availability of adequate water during the summer.
PMC’s water supply department head Nandkishor Jagtap said about 130 MLD water was flowing into the Mutha canal from Khadakwasla to supply water to Phursungi water supply scheme. The administration decided to lay a pipeline and the efforts helped save around 130 MLD water. Another official said PMC has been able to save about 70 MLD water from other efforts, taking the collective water saving to 200 MLD.
The officials, however, said their demand for an additional water quota for the city still persisted. “We want more water for the city as the population has gone up after the inclusion of 34 villages into PMC limits. The area under agriculture has reduced. We want the irrigation department to conduct a study on how much area of farming has gone down resulting in a drop in demand for water,” an official said.
