Track-laying begins on Porur-Poonamallee stretch in Chennai | Chennai News – Times of India

Chennai: In less than two years, commuters will be able to travel on a 16km elevated metro rail line from Powerhouse in Kodambakkam to Poonamallee Bypass as Chennai metro rail has started laying ballastless tracks and constructing stations.
Officials said tracks are being installed on a portion of the stretch between Porur Bypass and Iyyappanthangal stations.Construction of the stations, including the entry/exit points, are underway in at least four locations Porur Bypass station, Thelliaragaram, Iyyappanthangal and Kaatupakkam. Powerhouse to Poonamallee Bypass, which is part of the 26.1km corridor-4 from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass of the 116.1km phase2, is around 16km and has 19 elevated stations.
“Around 66% of the work is completed between Porur Bypass station and Poonamallee Bypass stations, and around 46% work is completed between Powerhouse station and Porur Junction. The Powerhouse to Poonamallee line is likely to be commissioned by November 2025,” said K Annadurai, CMRL spokesperson. T Archunan, director (projects), said a series of testing will begin on the stretch after the tracks are installed, and before the construction of the stations begins.
M A Siddique, managing director, CMRL, said while the 16km stretch from Powerhouse to Poonamallee Bypass will be the first to open for public in 2025, Thirumayilai and nearby stations on corridor 3 and 4 may be the last to be commissioned in 2028.
While construction work on this stretch is progressing faster than the rest of phase2, there have been quite a few challenges. Earlier, officials said the construction of a 4km double decker-elevated line from Alwarthirunagar to Alapakkam, which is part of the Powerhouse to Poonamallee Bypass stretch, was moving slower than the rest of the line as it involved complex construction. Several pre-stressed concrete segments had to be installed one above the other after the construction of pillars. Workers also stumbled upon a high voltage underground electric line in the way of the pillars they were building for the double decker, which further slowed down the work.
Once the line gets commissioned at the end of 2025, passengers can travel from Kodambakkam to Poonamallee in a driverless train though it may take a year or two for the stretch to connect other routes on phase2.
