Kolkata: Trinamool on Friday lashed out against BJP for its “selective outrage” in Sandeshkhali and dubbed it a “well-orchestrated exercise before the Lok Sabha polls against the one CM who is standing up to them”.
Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee questioned BJP, CPM and Congress’s narrative in Sandeshkhali and their silence on the death of four children due to alleged BSF negligence in Chopra.
“All are silent where four kids lost their lives due to BSF negligence. Do those kids hold no value (for the opposition)?” Abhishek asked. He said, “Our delegation met the governor and asked him to visit Chopra. He is yet to (go there). When the BJP delegation visited him, he went there (in Sandeshkhali) within 24 hours. It shows where his priorities are.”
Referring to the LS privileges committee summons in Sukanta Majumdar’s case, Banerjee said, “The BJP MP (Majumdar) slipped from the car and a summon was sent. Where was this parliament committee when our MPs were brutally assaulted, female MPs were dragged by hair,” adding, “I would request all leaders to visit each household to tell people how our female MPs — Birbaha Hansda and Mahua Moitra — were assaulted by Delhi police.”
Party’s Rajya Sabha nominee Sushmita Dev questioned BJP’s “selective outrage”. “Those raving and ranting now on TV remained silent during rapes in Unnao and Hathras because UP has a BJP govt. CM Mamata Banerjee has unequivocally stated in the assembly yesterday that she will get to the bottom of the truth and take every action against all perpetrators,” he said.
Sagarika Ghose, another TMC Rajya Sabha nominee, dubbed BJP’s attempts to politicise Sandeshkhali, as “unfortunate and despicable”. “It’s a well-orchestrated exercise before the Lok Sabha polls against the one CM who is standing up to them. CM Mamata Banerjee has already made it clear that there will be zero tolerance for crimes against women and there will be a thorough investigation. No party has done as much for women as TMC with welfare schemes and women’s representation. This is in stark contrast to the BJP’s silence during the women wrestlers protests and incidents of heinous assault in BJP ruled UP,” she said in a statement.
