Ludhiana: Members of Bharatiya Kisaan Union (BKU) Ekta Ugrahan freed Ladowal toll plaza as part of the farmers’ protest against the govt. The protesters camped at the toll plaza at 12 noon on Saturday and raised slogans against the Centre in the presence of the police.
BKU Ugrahan district (rural) president Gurpreet Singh said that Haryana and the central govt were harassing farmers at Shambhu border, which was unacceptable. To register their ire, he said that BKU Ekta Ugrahan had freed Ladowal toll plaza, the costliest in Punjab from 12 noon on Saturday. He said that they would continue to make vehicles pass without paying toll till Sunday evening.
According to him, a meeting of the Sanyukt Kisaan Morcha (SKM) was scheduled on Sunday and a major announcement was likely. He also said that the government could not suppress the voice of farmers using tear gas shells. The more atrocities the govt inflicted on farmers, the more strength they would gain, he asserted.
Accusing the govt of dithering on their demands, joint secretary, BKU Ugrahan, Sudagar Singh Ghudani said that farmers were forced to close the toll plaza so that they could be heard. He added that farmers knew how to fight for their rights.
A protester claimed that the govt was trying to buy time till imposition of the model code of conduct so that no decision could be taken on MSP. A commuter said that the sit-in by the farmer organisation did not affect traffic and vehicles movement remained smooth for the most part.
A commuter said on condition of anonymity that he was happy about not having to pay toll at the Ladhowal Plaza as one side toll charges for cars is Rs 215.
