Bengaluru: The high court has upheld a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court order which rejected the bail plea of a man facing terror charges.
Mazin Adbul Rahman, 22, from Mangaluru, is one of the six people arrested for their alleged involvement in communal clashes in Shivamogga in August 2022 in which a person — Prem Singh — was stabbed to death. The special NIA court in October 2023 rejected the bail petitions of the suspects, currently in judicial custody at Bengaluru Central Prison. Rahman was the first to approach the court for bail. Two other suspects have been absconding.
The NIA, which had taken over the case from Shivamogga police, found during its investigation that the communal clashes were part of terror activities.
According to a chargesheet filed by the agency, Rahman and five others were operatives of global terror group Islamic State. The clashes in Shivamogga began after a mob had gone on the rampage protesting the installation of a portrait of Hindutva idealogue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar by right-wing groups.
The six youths, inspired by IS, had been allegedly preparing to carry out destructive activities in Karnataka. Rahman’s counsel argued in HC that his client’s name appears only in NIA’s supplementary chargesheet and except for the allegation that Rahman was involved in conducting the recce, there are no accusations against him.
According to special public prosecutor P Prasanna Kumar, the bail petition was rejected keeping in mind the gravity of the case.
