Kolkata: When a teenage girl went missing from Wadala in Mumbai on Dec 29 last year, few would have thought that it would be linked to a murder committed in central Kolkata 12 years earlier. As it turned out, the accused in Mumbai had jumped parole after Covid and may now be in Kashmir with three state agencies in hot pursuit.
According to officers at Lalbazar, a young woman was found murdered at Durga Charan Mitra Street in April 2012.While Burtolla police carried the initial investigation, the homicide section picked up the investigations after it was established that the victim had been trafficked into sex trade.
“We found that one Bipul Shikari had brought the victim to Sonagachhi and was last seen with her before the murder. A few days later, Bipul, whom many call Master, was arrested for smothering the victim,” recalled an officer.
A detailed probe by the homicide section revealed he was involved in trafficking minors to Kolkata’s red-light areas from the districts. In 2016, after a prolonged trial, Bipul was sentenced for life and lodged in jail.
However, when Wadala police from Mumbai landed at Lalbazar in the second week of February and sought help to nab Bipul Shikari for kidnapping a 12-year-old child on Jan 29, the police realised Bipul, who had been granted parole during Covid, did not turn himself in after the pandemic.
Jail officials said they had lodged a case at Kalyani in Nadia in this regard.
Police teams are now trying to nab Bipul. The cops suspect that the minor who is now in his custody for several days might have been murdered or sold off. “We are coordinating with Kashmir police and all forces in the adjoining areas. We are sending details about him and his photograph to all police units in north India,” said an officer.
