BENGALURU: In a special drive against vehicle owners whose traffic penalties for multiple violations have crossed Rs 50,000, south division traffic police seized 85 vehicles, including a car.
Now, the owners have to pay up to get their vehicles back or approach the traffic court concerned seeking some discount in fines. Whatever may be the case, one has to pay the fine, police said. The vehicles were seized from Jayanagar, Banashankari, KS Layout, Basavanagudi, VV Puram, Hulimavu, Adugodi, Mico Layout, Madivala, HSR Layout, Electronics City and Bellandur. Twenty-six of the vehicles were seized in Jayanagar alone.
DCP (traffic-south) Shivaprakash Devaraj said there are at least 850 vehicles in the southern part of the city with pending fines of Rs 50,00 and above. “Now, we’ve started seizing such vehicles. The owners are asking whether they can pay half the amount now and take their vehicles. That’s not possible,” he said. Asked what one should do if the fine amount exceeds the current price of the vehicle, Devaraj said, “Some owners said they would surrender the vehicle and leave them back in the police station. This can’t happen. At any cost, they must pay the fine. We’ll wait for two weeks and then file a chargesheet in the court concerned.”
Joint commissioner of police (traffic) MN Anucheth said there are at least 2,681 vehicles in the city, with pending fines of Rs 50,000 and more. “We’ll reach out to all the owners and seize the vehicles. In many cases, addresses might have been changed or the vehicle might have been sold. In such cases, we’ll contact the first owner as well as the present owner. However, the onus to pay the fine will be on the present owner,” the oficer explained.
