Hyderabad: Cleiton Silva‘s 11th minute header helped East Bengal sneak past Hyderabad Football Club (HFC) 1-0 in their ISL match at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium here on Saturday.
Nishu Kumar played the cross from the left and Silva helped it into the net to give an early lead to his team.
The Red and Gold Brigade came into the match seeking their first win in six games. They suffered consecutive losses to NorthEast United Football Club and Mumbai City Football Club in the run up to this match.
East Bengal head coach Carles Cuadrat will be pleased as his players managed to penetrate the inexperienced Hyderabad side.
Hosts Hyderabad played well but were not lucky enough. In the second half HFC launched a strong attack.
They came so close to securing the equaliser in the 85th minute. A ball over the East Bengal backline by Mark had almost fetched the equaliser for HFC, but Jeremy’s header crashed into the post.
Thereafter, Hyderabad got into more trouble as Alex Saji and Joao Victor picked second yellow cards and were sent off in the injury time of the second half.
Already languishing at the bottom of the table without a victory this season, Hyderabad will miss the services of these experienced men. Saji otherwise had a very good game at the back.
East Bengal have overtaken Chennaiyin FC and Bengaluru FC and will hope that this victory will give a good boost to their qualification prospects for the playoff. They will face Jamshedpur FC on February 22 while Hyderabad play Bengaluru FC on Feb 24.
