Salem: A special court for trial of SC/ST (prevention of atrocities) Act cases was inaugurated at the Salem district court premises by Madras high court justices R Subramanian, G K Ilanthiraiyan, and R N Manjula on Saturday. Earlier in the day they had also inaugurated an additional district court in Attur.
High court justice Ilanthiraiyan said people from Attur and its surrounding villages can now save time with the new additional district court being inaugurated there.“Otherwise, they will have to travel at least 50km to Salem for their cases,” he said, adding that as many as 422 cases have been transferred to the new court from the Salem district court. The justice appealed to the advocates to support the courts in disposing of the cases that have been pending for many years. He also urged them to create legal awareness among the public, as a social responsibility.
Justice Subramanian in his address advised junior advocates to learn from their seniors on arguing before the court. “Special courts like this should not be found empty without even a single case for trial,” he said. He pointed out that as many as 56,000 cases are pending with eight family courts in Chennai alone. “Family courts usually functioned only one day a week in 1986. Now, eight courts are being run only for family cases,” he said.
Judges from Salem district courts, senior advocates, and several others were present at the inauguration which was headed by principal district judge (PDJ) S Sumathi.
