Kolkata: Even before summer sets in, the water supply department of Kolkata Municipal Corporation has been flooded with complaints of water scarcity from across the city. The problem has been compounded in areas where residents still depend on groundwater.
After placing the civic body’s budget for 2024-25 at the KMC House on Saturday, mayor Firhad Hakim appealed to councillors present to bring to his notice pockets of water crisis in their respective wards so that he could take up the matter with civic officials and find a solution at the earliest.
Sources in the KMC water supply department said reports of water crisis were pouring in from areas that are known as crisis zones due to a rise in temperature.
“With the temperature rising, the water consumption pattern has been changing rapidly. We are aware of it and are accordingly taking measures to augment supply in crisis zones,” said a KMC water supply department senior official.
According to an estimate, while on an average the KMC supplies 165 litres of water daily to an individual in Kolkata during winters, by the second week of April, the demand soars and almost doubles. “This year, we need to take steps in advance as the reports of the crisis have started pouring in much before we reach the peak of summer,” said the civic official.
Sources in the KMC said councillors from Garden Reach-Metiabruz belt, Behala, Tollygunge-Jadavpur belt and those representing vast areas of EM Bypass had been crying hoarse for a sudden water crisis that could worsen within a month. Some north and central Kolkata pockets that include Burrabazar, Jorasanko, Jorabagan, Bowbazar Street, College Street have also started witnessing crisis in pockets, confirmed a KMC official.
A KMC official said the department was readying to combat the crisis by supplying adequate water to the booster pumping stations located in the vicinity of the scarcity zones from the water treatment plants. For a temporary relief, the department will rely on supply of water tankers to the affected pockets.
“We have asked our officials in the boroughs to keep a watch on crisis zones and prepare a daily report on the supply demand gap. If we fail to augment our potable water supply from the treatment plants, we will try to eliminate the crisis by sending water tankers from our booster pumping stations,” said a KMC official.
