PANAJI: Union home minister Amit Shah on Sunday assured chief minister Pramod Sawant to resolve the issue of reservation of four assembly seats for Goa’s Scheduled Tribes (ST) community.
“I have requested for expediting the matter of reservation of seats in the Goa Legislative Assembly for the ST population. Shah has assured resolution of the matter.A delegation of the ST community could not be part of the meeting owing to a last-minute exigency. However, the home minister will meet them on the next occasion,” Sawant said.
Last week, Goa urged the Centre to constitute a delimitation commission to identify four assembly constituencies in the state to be reserved for the ST community.
A delegation led by Sawant along with law minister Alexio Sequeira, speaker Ramesh Tawadkar, art and culture minister Govind Gaude and Cortalim MLA Anton Vas met Union tribal affairs minister Arjun Munda.
Sawant submitted a memorandum demanding the constitution of a delimitation commission for determining seats to be reserved for the ST community in the Goa
Munda told the delegation that the constitution of a commission is a prerogative of the Union home ministry and he will positively recommend it to the home ministry.Sawant said besides the ST reservation issue, he discussed the political scenario in the state and the probable candidates for Lok Sabha election.
Sawant said that within a fortnight, candidates for Lok Sabha will be announced.
