Kolkata: Calcutta University (CU) will implement an academic credit bank system from the 2024-25 session following a syndicate decision after a Feb 6 meeting. A notice issued by CU to principals of undergraduate colleges asked for a mandatory field to be kept in the application form during fresh admission in UG courses.
The CU notice reads, “The academic bank (ABC) ID to be made compulsory for the said students and a mandatory field be kept in the application form for registration for inserting the ID.”
The academic bank of credit (ABC) system is a virtual storehouse that contains information of credits earned by individual students. It will enable students to open their accounts and give multiple options for entering and leaving colleges or universities. It offers horizontal mobility for students to move from one institute to another and allows them to keep track of credits earned throughout their learning journey.
Lady Brabourne College principal Siuli Sarkar said, “The ABC system is required but introducing the ABC ID at the time of registration of fresh admission will be a complex method. Citing the term ‘mandatory’ in the notice has raised a lot of questions that requires to be answered before a new academic session begins. Some workshops are also required, not only for colleges but for the service provider as well.”
Surendranath College principal Indranil Kar said, “This is a good move as the ABC system is an essential part of the new system. However, a clear notice is also required for the first batch of the four-year degree programme.”
The principal of a south Kolkata college said, “It is good that the university has taken such an important decision ahead of the new academic session. But a format of online admission, including new criteria, need to be circulated so that colleges and service providers do not face any trouble in designing it.”
Presidency University and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology have introduced the ABC system from last year. Presidency University registrar Debajyoti Konar said,“In Presidency University, more than 90% of jobs are over and are expected to be completed within this month. Under three major steps in the process of implementation of ABC, registration of institutions has been done and registration of students is almost done. A few are left, which will be completed shortly. Credit mapping by the institute is underway and will be completed soon.”
Other universities, like Jadavpur University and Rabindra Bharati University, are yet to take a decision regarding this.
