PANAJI: Nearly a month after deciding to demolish the unsafe fish market building, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has set in motion the process to construct temporary stalls to accommodate the meat vendors who are currently housed in the particular building.
“We have floated a tender for construction of temporary meat stalls, all legal vendors who are operating from the ground floor of the fish market building will be given space in the temporary structure to conduct their business,” a senior official of the CCP said.
He said that the work for construction of temporary stalls is estimated to cost Rs 15.26 lakh, excluding goods and services tax and added that the time allowed for carrying out the work will be 45 days, including monsoon from the 15th day after the date of written orders to commence the work.
The structural stability report by the Government Polytechnic, Panaji, said that the fish market building is not only perilous for humans, but has also outlived its economic life.
“After demolition of the existing fish market building, a new one will be constructed as part of Phase III of the municipal market complex and thereafter the council and the CCP administration will decide on rehabilitating the meat vendors in the proposed new building,” the official said.
The official further said that ahead of the monsoon, the CCP will be undertaking repairs and reconstruction work of existing rain water drains, cross drains and existing footpaths with chequered tiles and pavers in some of the city wards.
