Pune: Drum circle, zumba, and street art were among the many activities that received a huge response from residents on Sunday at the Happy Streets event in Kharadi.
Happy Streets is an initiative by The Times of India and Maharashtra Times that encourages people to use non-motorised transport. It appeals to citizens to come out onto the streets and socialise every Sunday morning through a wide array of activities.Organised in collaboration with the Pune Municipal Corporation, the event is sponsored by Kolte Patil Developers.
Many participants enjoyed the cycling, skipping, and other rope events while children took part in drawing and cycling activities.
Ramesh Sharma, a resident of Rakshak Society in Kharadi, said, “We have been coming to this event for the past two Sundays and spend at least two hours here trying various activities It gives a good start to the day.”
The zumba event at the end of the traffic-free stretch in Kharadi drew the maximum crowd. It consisted of children and even senior citizens tapping their feet to Bollywood songs. Sara Shaikh, a Zumba participant, said, “It is not often we can dance like this on the streets. It is a very refreshing and pleasant Sunday and if we can sweat it out in the morning hours, nothing like it.”
Children took colourful chalks kept at the table and displayed their creativity by drawing characters from cartoons on the roads. Some of them played snakes and ladder games, while many of them took the football, basketball, and tennis balls to keep themselves busy throughout the morning.
Participant Vishakha Deshmukh, who had come from Lohegaon, said, “It was my first time at Happy Streets and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I reached here at 8am with my children and all of us did what interested us. We were on our own but enjoyed participating in various games.”
