Noida: With no update about the committee made to look into their demands, protesting farmers said they will hold a meeting on Monday to decide their next move.
They also warned on Sunday they will not vote in the coming general election if govt doesn’t agree to their demand for 10% abadi land as compensation for acquisition.
Farmers who have been staging a sit-in demonstration outside the offices of Noida Authority and the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) since Dec last year said officials had asked for time till Feb 18 for a decision on the committee.
Blocked from entering Delhi, farmer groups from UP had protested on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway on Feb 8, bringing traffic to a crawl for hours on the roads near the city’s border with the capital. They had called off the expressway blockade only after they were assured by the Noida administration that a high-powered committee would look into their demand.
“It has been ten years since elected representatives of this govt have not paid attention to the farmers’ issues. This time, the slogan of ‘no land, no vote’ will be raised if our demand is not met. The campaign will spread in every village,” said Kisan Sabha leader Nirankar Pradhan.
Addressing protesters, the outfit’s district president Rupesh Verma said the administration had assured us that a high-powered committee will get back to us by Feb 18 regarding 10% abadi plot and implementation of the new law.
“Till now, no information has been given by the administration. They had made a similar promise earlier in June 2023 also, but govt had sent a letter refusing to form the panel,” Verma said.
The meeting comes at a time farmers in Punjab and parts of Haryana have tried to renew their prolonged agitation, which was called off in 2021 on the condition that a law guaranteeing minimum support price (MSP) will be introduced.
For days, Delhi-NCR was made into a fortress to ensure that protesting farmers from Punjab and Haryana don’t surround the capital as they had done during the 2022-21 agitation.
On Sunday, Kisan Sabha convener Veer Singh Nagar said govt was helping builders, but farmers were left to struggle on roads.
“We will hold a meeting and further announcements can be made on the future course of the movement demanding 10% abadi land on Monday. We had expected that after getting assurance from Noida police chief and CEO of Noida Authority, a committee will be formed to resolve our demand. But once again, we are left with no update. As announced earlier, we will continue with our protest,” said Sukhvir Khalifa, Bharatiya Kisan Parishad leader.
