Ludhiana: Nine persons were injured, two of them seriously, in two pile-ups caused by poor visibility on the national highway near Khanna on Sunday morning.
Senior medical officer (SMO) Dr Maninder Bhasin said two persons who had suffered serious injuries had been referred to a Chandigarh hospital. While one of them suffered an injury to the head, the other suffered an injury in the abdomen.
The SMO said the remaining seven had been discharged after first aid.
As per reports, there was dense fog along the Amritsar-Delhi highway in Khanna on Sunday morning. Police said at 8.05am, six vehicles crashed into one after another. They included a bus, two trucks, a pickup vehicle and two cars.
According to sources, the six-vehicle pile-up happened when a car rammed into a Punjab Roadways bus, which had crashed into a truck in front of it. A truck coming behind the car then braked and hit the four-wheeler. The remaining two vehicles then crashed into each other, one after another.
Police said that after the accident, the local SHO and traffic police force reached the spot and got the vehicles cleared. Traffic was regulated in shortest possible time, said a police official.
The second pile-up was comparatively minor. Sources said the accident took place when a car rammed into a truck ahead of it. The occupants of the car were getting ready for a marriage in the family when the accident happened. A police official said no one suffered any serious injuries in the second accident.
