Hope for ops start of three new Metro links in March first week | Kolkata News – Times of India

Kolkata: The city may get three new Metro lines in the first week of March with East-West Metro’s under-river stretch, the New Garia-Ruby line and the 1.2km Majerhat extension beyond Taratala. Agencies implementing the three corridors have been asked to be ready for a March 6 commissioning.
If all goes well, PM Narendra Modi may flag them off from the new Esplanade station of East-West Metro, also called the Green line.He may take a ride from Esplanade to Howrah Maidan through the 520m under-river tunnel below the Hooghly.
The under-river corridor will reduce travel time from Howrah to Kolkata and also form a direct connection with the North-South Metro line.
East-West Metro is partially operational between Sector V and Sealdah. Work is pending on the Sealdah-Esplanade section in the Bowbazar area where construction has been hit by land subsidence. Thus, the 2.5km Esplanade-Sealdah section is being skipped for now,
The same day, the North-South Metro will be linked to the the 5.4km New Garia-Ruby (Orange) line at the New Garia terminus.
The 1.2km Majerhat extension from Taratala, part of the Purple line’s most crucial extension, is also important. The Majerhat Metro station is embedded inside Eastern Railway’s suburban station and will allow local train commuters to easily take the Metro from Majerhat to Joka.
The line, which has been running without signals so far, has now been equipped with the electronic interlocking (EI) signalling system. This means an increased frequency from the current 40 minutes.
Chief commissioner of railway safety (CCRS) Janak Kumar Gard inspected all three lines from February 4-7 and has already issued an approval for the New Garia-Ruby line to run with signals.
Formal nod for the other two lines is just a matter of formality. “The CCRS was satisfied with the way the East-West Metro line has shaped up. In the feedback regarding this stretch and the Purple line’s Majerhat extension, he made fresh observations,” Metro Railway’s AGM and principal chief engineer V K Srivastava told TOI on Thursday. Metro Railway has submitted the compliance reports. The formal nods will come this week, sources said.
