Chennai: Uniting many seasoned leaders in the Tamil Nadu Congress party and making a team effort to defeat fascistic forces would be his immediate concern, said newly appointed TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai. He said there was an urgent need to save the country from “fascist forces”.
Taking charge as the new Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president on Saturday, Selvaperunthagai replaced K S Alagiri, who served as TNCC chief for five years.An AICC order appointing Selvaperunthagai was issued on Saturday evening.
The TNCC chief went on a garlanding spree on Sunday morning, paying floral tributes to the statues of M K Gandhi, former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, former Tamil Nadu chief minister K Kamaraj, and DK founder Periyar E V Ramasamy besides the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar in different locations in Chennai.
He said only Tamil Nadu had many seasoned leaders in the Congress party. Uniting them and making them work as a team to strengthen the Congress party, plagued by factionalism, would be his priority now, he said.
The TNCC chief added that the DMK-Congress alliance would emerge victorious in all 39 seats in Tamil Nadu in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections with margins higher than what they achieved in 2019.
Later, Selvaperunthagai visited the Rajiv Gandhi memorial in Sriperumbudur. He told reporters that minorities were under threat under the BJP-led government at the Centre.
Meanwhile, leaders, including AMMK leader T T V Dhinakaran, PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss, Karur MP Jothimani, and other leaders congratulated Selvaperunthagai.
He won from the Sriperumbudur assembly constituency in 2021 election, had worked in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) before he turned a dalit activist. He joined the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), led by Thol Thirumavalavan, who is currently a DMK ally.
