Nagpur: The ongoing agitation of Associated Social Health Activists (Asha) workers won’t be called off till the state govt fulfils their demands related to compensation and job benefits, said union leader Rajendra Sathe. The Asha workers have been on indefinite strike since January 12 for multiple pending demands, which primarily revolve around financial compensation.
Asha workers, undergo formal training, are selected from the village itself, which acts as an extra layer of trust within the community. They are contractual workers and for long have been demanding either permanent jobs or compensation at par with govt employees.
Sathe, a senior member of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), said, “Asha workers are the actual foot soldiers who deliver the last mile services of our public health system. During Covid era, they worked without fear of their own lives and ensured that medicines were delivered to needy people.”
