Jalandhar: Rajya Sabha member Vikramjit Singh Sahney has written to information and broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur that the govt should block the social media accounts that target Sikhs with hate speech to propagate communal discord.
The MP asked the govt to use its the emergency powers under the Information Technology (IT) Rules 2021 to also book the owners of these social media handles. With the letter to Thakur, Sahney attached a dossier of screenshots of these hateful messages, some of which threaten a repeat of the 1984 pogrom of Sikhs.
Sahney asked the minister to nip this content in the bud for the peaceful coexistence of all religions and communities. He said: “Those who post degrading remarks about any community deserve tough action.” Sahney and Congress legislator Pargat Singh had flagged this issue during the latest farmers’ protests and posted screenshots of several X handles as evidence. Pargat had also put the Punjab govt and cops in the dock for blocking pro-farmer social media accounts but ignoring the handles that spread hate.
