Berhampur: Days after a man was arrested in Nasik and 40 counterfeit Army uniforms were seized from him, a joint operation by the Military Intelligence unit in Gopalpur and Berhampur police recovered 488 metres of cloth meant to make fake uniforms from a clothes shop near Old Bus stand area of silk city on Monday.
“A criminal case was registered against the owner of the clothes shop under different sections of the IPC and Copyright Act for unauthorized sale of cloth that resemble Army uniforms,” said SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M.“The shop owner was not arrested but a notice has been issued to him,” he said. The value of the seized material would be around Rs 1.20 lakh
“The Indian Army unveiled the new digital pattern uniform on January 15, 2022, and the old uniform is in the process of being replaced. The Army has also obtained Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) for the design and camouflage patterns for a 10-year period, extendable for another five years,” the SP added.
“This has been done to prevent unauthorized vendors from manufacturing and selling Army uniforms in the open market as it poses a security threat,” said Vivek M.
“The new uniforms have to be sold only in Army canteens. Due to the IPR, the Army possesses exclusive rights to the design and can file a complaint against any unauthorized sale of this design,” said the SP.
Police said an employee of the Army Air Defence College, Gopalpur, found the clothes shop selling the fake material. The case was registered against the shop owner based on his complaint.
Vivek M said preliminary probe has revealed that the shopowner procured the material from a Kolkata trader and who in turn got it from Ludhiana, Punjab. “Investigation is on to verify the place where the textile has been manufactured and the people behind it,” the SP added
On February 3, the Southern Command Military Intelligence, Pune, and Bhingar Camp Police Station at Ahmednagar in Maharashtra arrested a person from Nasik and recovered 40 fake uniforms from him.
