Housing Minister calls for redevelopment of buildings and areas built in the 1960s | Delhi News – Times of India

New Delhi: Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday said there is need to “quickly” rebuild much of Delhi quickly considering that many buildings came up in 1960s and were not built for the future.
Speaking at a workshop on recycling and use of construction and demolition (C&D) waste in the construction sector, Puri said, “Much of the construction that took place in 1950s and 60s (in Delhi) was not conforming to a plan; it was not built for future…much of Delhi which was constructed in the 60s, I suspect have to be rebuilt and quickly.”
Citing examples of the New Parliament Building and Kartavya Path, the minister said govt has put focus planned development to cater to the need of future.Puri said infrastructure development will be a vital component for India to become a developed country by 2047.
The minister also said that people are now becoming more conscious about the harms of C&D waste, and the recycled materials are being used in construction projects. He added that solid waste processing in India has increased from mere a 17% in 2014 to more than 77% in 2024.
“Now, we are transferring these capabilities in other forms of waste management, including construction and demolition waste, plastic waste, e-waste and bio-hazardous waste,” Puri said.
Earlier, flagging the menace of dumping C&D waste along roads and outside cities, Union urban affairs secretary Manoj Joshi urged state and city administrations to open more collection centres and enforce their processing.
