Coimbatore: A committee constituted by district collector Kranthi Kumar Pati on Tuesday inspected the Trichy Road to check the feasibility of laying service roads to regulate the traffic flow ahead of commencing the Singanallur flyover work.
Led by G Manuneethi, divisional engineer (road safety), Coimbatore circle, the committee, comprising officials attached to the National Highways (NH) wing of the State Highways Department, city corporation, city traffic police, and transport and revenue departments, inspected the stretch from Singanallur Junction to Vasantha Mills Junction.
Pointing out that Singanallur had been witnessing massive traffic snarls during the peak hours because of the heavy vehicle movement on Trichy Road, a source said the district collector had ordered officials to carry out the flyover work without disturbing traffic movement.
Manuneethi said, “There aren’t any alternative routes to Trichy Road from Singanallur to divert traffic during the flyover work. Hence, we are planning to lay service roads from the uzhavar sandhai to Vasantha Mills and vice versa. Trichy Road has enough width to lay the service roads. The flyover work will be carried out only after laying the service roads.”
Dhanabalan, divisional engineer, NH wing, has meanwhile instructed corporation officials to remove the concrete slabs kept along the Trichy Road.
While the Union road transport and highways ministry had sanctioned 141.8 crore for the 2.4km long, four-lane flyover at Singanallur in 2021-22, the tender didn’t evoke much response from the firms, which said the amount quoted by the government was low. So, a re-tender would be floated on March 7.
“The flyover will help reduce traffic congestion at Singanallur Junction,” said Manuneethi.
The NH wing is also going to construct another flyover at Saibaba Colony on Mettupalayam Road. The Union road ministry has sanctioned 59.93 crore for the 1.2km long, four-lane flyover.
