Nagpur: Resident doctors across Maharashtra are gearing up for an indefinite strike starting Thursday, February 22, as the Central Committee of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) issued a final 48-hour warning to the state government on Tuesday.
Dr Abhijit Helge, president of Central MARD, said the decision was taken after govt didn’t fulfil promises on issues like stipend hikes, timely payments, and improved working conditions.
“Despite assurances from DyCM Ajit Pawar and medical education minister Hasan Mushrif on Feb 7, commitments to address our concerns remain unfulfilled,” Dr Helge said. The demands include immediate funding for repairs and construction, regularized stipend payments with arrears clearance, and a ₹10,000 stipend increase.
The association emphasized that patient care remains their top priority, and emergency services will continue during the strike. However, they also highlighted the need for decisive action to safeguard their rights.
“We urge the govt to act swiftly and address our demands within the next 48 hours,” Dr Helge said, adding that failure to do so will result in an indefinite strike until justice is served.
This upcoming strike is likely to impact healthcare services all government hospitals and medical colleges. Nagpur has two GMCs –Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH). Both medical colleges together have more than 650 resident doctors.
