After Farmer Dies At Khanauri, Agitation Put On Hold For 2 Days | Chandigarh News – Times of India

Patiala/ Bathinda: Amid Haryana Police action to stop protesters from breaching barricades at the inter-state borders at Shambhu and Khanauri on Wednesday, a 22-year-old farmer died due to a suspected bullet injury and 15 others were hospitalized after being injured at Khanauri.
Union agriculture minister Arjun Munda had earlier in the day said Centre was ready to discuss all issues like MSP demand, crop diversification, stubble issue and FIRS in the fifth round.
By evening, farm outfits decided to suspend the protest for two days. “We do not want any more loss of life,” said farmer leader Sarvan Singh Pandher. Apart from this, Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Sidhupur) president Jagjit Singh Dallewal was admitted to hospital after he complained of uneasiness.
The victim, Shubkaran Singh of Balloh village of Bathinda district, was brought to the Government Rajindra hospital in Patiala at around 3.15 pm, from Patran civil hospital, located 56 km away. He was a poor farmer who had joined the agitation with the hope of a waiver of his father’s Rs 10 lakh debt.
“Shubkaran Singh is suspected to have died of a bullet wound in his head. A total of nine farmers, including two who were seriously injured, were brought to Patran civil hospital in the afternoon,” said Patiala civil surgeon Dr Raminder Kaur. Government Rajindra hospital medical superintendent, Dr HS Rekhi, said the exact cause of Shubkaran’s death will be declared after the postmortem examination.
Giving an account of the incident, farmer leader Ravinder Deep Singh from Bathinda district said, “A group of volunteers was standing at a distance from the police barricades to prevent the protesters from going ahead. However, the crowd increased and the people began raising slogans. Haryana police then used water cannons and teargas shells on them.
