Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Urban district administration has handed over to BBMP a piece of gomala land at Byappanahalli village, near Bagalur in north Bengaluru, to set up a landfill.
Bengaluru Urban district deputy commissioner Dayananda KA issued the order, thus giving temporary relief to BBMP, which has been looking for spaces to dispose of mixed waste.
Garbage disposal had snowballed into a crisis Saturday after residents of villages around Bellahalli landfill, where mixed waste is being dumped currently, blocked the compactors. As villagers dug their heels in, BBMP and Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd (BSWML) faced a tough situation as they did not have space to dump about 300 truckloads of mixed garbage generated in the city daily.
The villagers relented on Tuesday only after BSWML officials told them that waste would be disposed of at the landfill for another 10 days.
Following a request from BBMP officials to Bengaluru Urban district administration for the land, Dayananda issued the order to hand over 2 acres and 32 guntas of gomala land, situated in survey no. 80 at Byappanahalli village.
According to BBMP officials, the land has a deep quarry and they will use it as a landfill to dump mixed waste. BBMP chief commissioner Tushar Giri Nath said the Byappanahalli landfill will be readied in six days and mixed waste will be dumped there scientifically.
Civic officials said the govt is proposing to acquire at least 100 acres of land on the outskirts to create waste-processing units.
