BENGALURU: A woman and her daughter allegedly kidnapped their neighbours’ two minor sons and made them work in Harihar, Davanagere, to recover Rs 85,000 the boys’ mother had borrowed and take revenge.
The boys, aged 14 and 7, were brought back home after the older one contacted their father Kiran (name changed) on the phone.
Kiran, a resident of Kaveripura, filed a complaint against garment firm employee Nalini alias Kavitha, 38, and her daughter at Kamakshipalya police on Feb 18.
“Nalini has been arrested and she told us that she was not aware of the law. She had borrowed money and given it to the boys’ mother. She thought it was fine to recover the money by putting the children to work. Her daughter’s role is yet to be established,” a officer said.
Kiran told police that his wife, who has been missing since November 17 last year, had borrowed Rs 85,000 from Nalini without his knowledge. The accused has been collecting Rs 2,000 a fortnight from him towards the repayment of the loan.
The two boys, studying in classes 9 and 2, went missing on December 9 last year. As Kiran went to the police station to complain, cops told him that his wife might have taken the children with her.
Kiran searched for his wife and sons in Dharmasthala, Siddaganga Mutt in Tumakuru and her relatives’ homes in vain.
He said he was under the impression that his sons were with his wife until February 15 when he received a call from an unknown number and his older son informed him that he and his brother had been kidnapped by Nalini and her daughter.
According to Kiran, Nalini had kept his sons at her father’s house at Malebennur in Harihara taluk in Davanagere district.
Kiran was shocked as Nalini had all along been acting innocent and even made him believe that his children were with his wife.
The elder boy told his father that they were not allowed to use the phone or talk to anyone in the neighbourhood and were warned against sharing their personal matters with others.
The boy also informed him that he was working in a provision store while his younger brother was made to do household chores. He had called his father from his colleague’s phone.
Kiran requested his elder son’s colleague to bring both his children to the bus stand at Harihar secretly and they were rescued as per the plan on Feb 17 and brought back home, police said.
The boys told Kiran that they were often beaten up by Nalini and her family members and were forced to work. They took away the elder boy’s earnings. According to Kiran, the duo kidnapped his sons to recover the money and take revenge.
The boys told police that they were threatened by the two women and forcibly taken in a bus to Malebennur.
A senior officer said: “We have registered the case under IPC sections 363 (kidnap), 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent to secretly and wrongfully confine a person) and section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act (cruelty to child).”
