CHANDIGARH: Criticising Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann for “mere” assurance of taking legal action against the BJP-led Haryana govt, the leader of opposition (LoP), Partap Singh Bajwa, on Thursday sought an independent judicial probe into Haryana police “brutality” on Punjab farmers.
“It’s high time for the Punjab CM, who also holds the home portfolio, to register a case against the Haryana police and Haryana home minister Anil Vij.The oppression by the Haryana police has been witnessed by everyone, yet the Punjab govt is still hesitating to take legal action. What are they waiting for?” Bajwa questioned.
The senior Congress leader said that had an FIR been registered on Feb 13, when the Haryana police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, Wednesday’s incidents would have been averted.
“Shubhkaran Singh allegedly died with a gunshot directly pointed at his head. Dozens of other farmers were injured. An independent judicial probe should be conducted to ascertain who ordered the Haryana police to declare war against peacefully protesting farmers,” Bajwa added.
The opposition leader said that the people of Punjab, particularly the farming community of the country, have every right to know the truth. They have every right to know why the “tyrant” Manohar Lal Khattar’s govt violated the basic tenets of democracy. Even though he knew that the farmers were going to protest in Delhi, his govt used excessive force to stop them.
