New Delhi: BJP on Thursday boycotted an all-party meeting convened by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to address the ‘one-time settlement’ of water bills in the city, calling it “a diversionary tactic” and saying the actual discussion should be about “corruption” in Delhi Jal Board.
Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Arvinder Singh Lovely and senior party functionary Haroon Yusuf, however, attended the meet.
AAP govt had proposed a special scheme to settle pending water bills. Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, however, had claimed the urban development department’s additional chief secretary was blocking it.
“BJP’s absence from the meeting indicates their opposition to the one-time settlement scheme for inflated water bills aimed at providing relief to Delhiites,” said Kejriwal.
“The scheme is to waive water bills of 90% of people and generate revenue for DJB. We will take this issue to the people and expose BJP’s dirty politics,” he added.
After the meeting, Bharadwaj and Lovely jointly addressed the media. Lovely said, “It’s unfortunate that BJP, which claims to speak for Delhi and the country, stayed away from the meeting called to discuss issues related to the public. We could have reached some conclusion based on logical discussion, but BJP avoided it. We have given suggestions to the CM. Congress will support every step of govt aimed at providing relief to Delhi’s people.”
Bharadwaj said, “It is clear BJP doesn’t want pending bills of over 10.50 lakh people to be resolved. While the people of Delhi are distressed, BJP is happy about it.”
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva said Kejriwal was “playing dirty politics” under the guise of water bill settlement and his main aim was to divert attention from corruption. “The issue is the result of the problems created by the installation of air-flow water meters by Kejriwal govt,” he said, adding, “BJP challenges Kejriwal to hold an all-party meeting to discuss DJB scams.”
Leader of opposition in Delhi Assembly R S Bidhuri said, “Until recently, Congress members questioned the govt on scams. Now, they seem to have become Kejriwal’s henchmen.”
“Kejriwal admitted in the assembly that incorrect bills were sent by DJB, so it should simply be zero bills,” he added.
Meanwhile, AAP’s Delhi state convenor Gopal Rai led a public gathering in Badarpur Thursday “to unite individuals facing hardships due to inaccurate water bills”.
