Hyderabad: With depleting water levels in reservoirs and irrigation projects, chief minister A Revanth Reddy has directed officials to write a letter to Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) to release water from Nagarjunasagar for drinking water purpose and also ensure the AP govt does not divert water.
Asking various departments, including irrigation, municipal administration, and panchayat raj departments to work together on Thursday, he directed the officials to prepare plans so that there should not be any drinking water scarcity in the ensuing summer in the state.
“Drinking water supply is our top priority and some of the reservoirs have almost reached dead storage level. Every village and hamlet should get water even during the summer,” the CM said, while reviewing drinking water supply situation in the state along with ministers N Uttam Kumar Reddy and Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said.
Officials explained the water levels at various reservoirs in the state.
Revanth Reddy enquired about the water supply situation in Greater Hyderabad and officials said as of now there was no water problem and, if required, more water could be drawn from Yellampally apart from Nagarjunasagar. The CM directed the police department not to stop tankers during daytime after officers said traffic police were objecting to movement of the water tankers during the day and it was affecting water supply to some areas.
Irrigation officials said the AP govt was drawing nine tmc ft of water from Nagarjunasagar, but the same quantity of water was not being utilized for drinking water purpose. The CM said the AP govt should be exposed with all statistics and also write to KRMB on water requirement to Telangana for drinking water supply in catchment areas.
“As of now, there was no immediate problem as Jurala reserves were enough for drinking water purpose and the state can request the Karnataka govt to release water from Narayanpur for drinking purpose,” officials said. The CM directed the officials to repair the motors, if required, by using MLA constituency development funds.
