Lucknow: A two-day international conference on educating people with special needs kicked off in Lucknow on Thursday. The conference — which discussed the history, challenges, and advancements in the field of special education — was co-organised by Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) and Perkins School for the Blind, Watertown, Massachusetts.
Professor Nora Griffin Shirley from Texas Tech University, USA, shared insights on the unique challenges faced by deaf and blind children during the conference. Highlighting the transformative power of technology, she showcased the success stories of two deaf-blind PhD students pursuing their studies.
Dr JP Singh, former member secretary of the Rehabilitation Council of India, New Delhi, presented his experiences promoting and raising awareness about education and rehabilitation for disabled children in India. He underscored the ample resources available and stressed the need for efficient utilisation. He identified the lack of trained special educators as the key challenge in deaf education, citing short-term and diploma programs offered by the Rehabilitation Council of India as potential solutions.

The scheme requires beneficiaries to have Parivar Pehchan Patra (PPP) and allows admission on orders of authorities. NGOs and CSR can participate.
