MLA Maman not a terrorist, reconsider UAPA against him, former CM Hooda urges Khattar | Chandigarh News – Times of India

Chandigarh: Opposition Congress in Haryana tried to prevail upon Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar to reconsider the state govt’s decision of charging party legislator Maman Khan under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for his alleged role in Nuh violence.
“He is not a terrorist and is a member of this house. He was already booked under other sections in which he has been granted bail.Slapping anti-terrorist laws against an MLA is not justified. We request you to reconsider this decision,” leader of opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda requested the Haryana CM during the ongoing budget session. A discussion on the no-confidence motion brought by the Congress party against the BJP-JJP government was being held at the time.
Turning down Hooda’s request, Khattar said that the state government had no role in slapping UAPA charges against Maman Khan. “The probe agency will submit its report to the court, let the court decide the issue,” Khattar said in response to Hooda’s plea.
The issue of Maman Khan was first raised by Rohtak MLA B B Batra during a discussion on the no-confidence motion. He said that the state was not being run in accordance with the law and deemed it unfortunate that a member of the house had been charged under such a stringent law. Tosham MLA and senior Congress leader Kiran Chaudhary also asked the state to not invoke the anti-terrorist law against the MLA.
As per the recent report pertaining to the Nuh violence submitted by the investigating agency, the state police have booked the Congress legislator from Ferozepur Jhirka in Nuh district under UAPA. The charges against the MLA were added almost six months after the FIR pertaining to Nuh violence was registered against him.
On Sep 14, 2023, Haryana police arrested Khan in connection with an FIR registered at Nagina police station. Some of the charges against him include Section 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups) 436 (Mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house, etc) of the IPC.
The legislator was booked as per the statement of the co-accused arrested in the case and on the basis of his call details.
