CHENNAI: Following the death of a woman they assaulted on Wednesday, a woman and her daughter were arrested at Washermanpet on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as V Muniamma, 37, a construction worker from Bhojarajan Nagar, Washermenpet.
Since a public water tap was close to Munniamma’s house, people used to keep buckets and pots near her main gate, said police .
Muniamma used to object to this practice of leaving pots by her main gate, saying it blocked the way to her house and made the place slippery.
On Wednesday, around 5pm, S Shanthi, 38, and her daughter S Valli, 20, a college student, left some pots outside Muniamma’s house. A quarrel ensued when she objected to it.
The mother and daughter then assaulted Muniamma with wooden logs till some neighbours stepped in to pacify the trio. Within an hour of the incident, Muniamma complained of breathlessness and was taken to Government Stanley Hospital for a checkup. She got first aid for external injuries, police said.
Later in the night, she complained of breathlessness again and fainted. She was rushed to the hospital where she was declared dead.
Her body was sent for a post-mortem to ascertain the cause of death.
The Washermanpet police registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and arrested Shanthi and Valli on Thursday.
