Bengaluru: To facilitate the construction of ramps on the northern side of Hebbal flyover, the BDA has begun laying an alternative road inside the ‘tree park’ at the junction.
The existing road located adjacent to the flyover (from Esteem Mall side) will be closed for the construction of pillars. Motorists coming from Yelahanka, Jakkur, Sahakarnagar and heading towards Mehkri Circle and Tumakuru Road (via service road) will have to use the new alternative road, once it is ready, to reach Mehkri Circle.
BDA engineer member HR Shantharajanna said, “Construction works related to adding ramps have already begun on Baptist Hospital side. At the other end (Esteem Mall side), piling works will be taken up shortly on the two-lane road located next to the flyover. A new road will be constructed inside the park and traffic coming on the service road and those heading towards Tumakuru Road will be diverted to the new road.”
According to Shantharajanna, once the additional ramps are ready, congestion at the junction will be eased as motorists coming from airport side will have more lanes to travel to Mehkri Circle.
After multiple delays due to various factors, including design modification, last year, the BDA started construction of the ramp from Baptist Hospital side. However, the work entered rough waters after South Western Railway (SWR) raised objection to the construction of the additional ramp over the existing rail tracks. Maintaining that in future, six more lines — including suburban rail tracks — would come up at the place, SWR asked BDA to get clearance before building an elevated road above the rail land.
The BDA has now approached the railways seeking clearance for the plans. “We’ve already held consultations with the suburban rail authorities, SWR and other agencies on building the elevated road above rail tracks. Designs have been submitted to SWR. After receiving approval, the work will be taken up,” a BDA official said.
“Right now, there have been discussions on how to make it less difficult for all the stakeholders. The impact on traffic on Hebbal flyover is being observed using barricades. Decisions about alternatives will be put into practice in some time,” said Siri Gowri, deputy commissioner of police (traffic, north).
Motorists face hardships
Vehicle users passing via Hebbal Junction have been facing hardship on a daily basis. As the Namma Metro’s Blue Line is advancing, motorists are enduring traffic gridlocks after Kodigehalli Gate.
Sumanth T, a motorist, said, “After Metro works started on the service road from Jakkur to Hebbal, the congestion has increased. At many places, BMRCL has removed the barricades but failed to asphalt the road. Dust from Metro construction sites is causing a lot of problems to motorists, especially bikers.”
Another daily commuter, Vijaya Prasad, said, “The traffic congestion will increase further once Metro construction works starts on the stretch located near the crematorium. In addition to this, if the BDA starts construction on the road near the tree park, there will be more congestion at the junction. The authorities should fix a timeline for completing the works and stick to it.”
