Probe tout racket in dist: Health panel asks cops | Kolkata News – Times of India

Kolkata: The West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission has asked the Murshidabad SP to investigate an alleged tout racket after hearing the complaint by a woman on Wednesday. The complainant, Polly Biwi — a resident of a village under Jalangi police station — had alleged that she was duped by a tout on the pretext of arranging treatment for her husband in Kolkata.
The tout, Mirznur Rehman — who is also a quack — had allegedly taken Rs 2 lakhs to get Polly Biwi’s husband, Mithun Mondal, operated for a malignant tumour at a private nursing home in Kolkata. Even as the surgery was conducted after the patient got admitted to the health facility on Sep 30 last year, he died four days later in the hospital.
The WBCERC found that even as the hospital bill amounted to Rs 90,000, the hospital took only Rs 70,000 and the doctor, who conducted the surgery, claimed to have not charged his fee. It was found that Rehman had usurped the rest of the amount. The hospital, however, denied having any links with Rehman and urged the commission to put a seal on such tout rackets. WBCERC has told the nursing home to offer a discount of Rs 20,000 to the patient’s family. The nursing home came forward to refund Rs 40,000 on humanitarian grounds.
