Guwahati: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati on Thursday made a forecast that parts of the northeast will witness light to moderate rainfall in most places and isolated heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning in the next 48 hours. Parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh are likely to be affected by rainfall during this period, said RMC scientist Sunit Das on Thursday.
Talking to TOI, Das said “moisture incursion” from the Bay of Bengal is likely to cause the rainfall.“Moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal is taking place to the northeast due to low-level southerly or south-westerly winds during February 22 and 23. Under its influence, fairly widespread rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds with wind speed reaching up to 30-40 kmph and heavy rainfall at isolated places are likely to be witnessed,” he added.
Almost all the northeastern states are likely to witness the effect of the moisture incursion during this period.
Das said the condition has been prevailing since Wednesday and is expected to continue till Friday and after that it will recede, withdrawing the effects from the region. He added, “During the last 24 hours, one or two places in the northeast, mostly in Arunachal Pradesh, received heavy rainfall due to the condition.”
From Wednesday 8.30 am to Thursday 8.30 am, Pasighat in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh received the highest rainfall (7 cm), followed by Tuting in Upper Siang district (6 cm ), Oyan Arg in East Siang district (5 cm), Kibithu (4 cm) and Hawai (2cm) — both in in Anjaw district. Nachu Arg in Upper Subansiri district received 3 cm rainfall and Roing in Lower Dibang Valley received 2 cm rainfall.
A bulletin issued by the RMC said light snowfall at isolated places in the higher reaches of Arunachal may occur by February 24.
