Biker and pedestrian die in Behala | Kolkata News – Times of India

Kolkata: A 28-year-old Behala resident lost his life in an attempt to save a pedestrian from being run over by his bike. The victim – Bitan Debnath – was hit by a private bus when on his way to work on Taratala Road around 12.23pm on Friday.
“Debnath was riding his bike when he noticed a man trying to cross the road amidst busy traffic. As he neared the pedestrian, he walked ahead.The biker, who was on the extreme left lane and wearing a helmet, was forced to swerve to his right to save the pedestrian. The bus, which was moving parallelly to the bike, could hardly brake. It hit Debnath and his bike skidded. The bus run over him. The victim was rushed to Vidyasagar Hospital and from there to SSKM hospital. However, Debnath was declared dead a little later,” a police officer said.
In another accident, 49-year-old Maya Dhar Barik, a resident of Nimtala Ghat Street, was killed metres from his residence after being hit by a bike. Barik hails from Balasore in Odisha. He was declared dead around 6.45pm at the RG Kar Hospital.
