Chennai: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday informed Madras high court that the decision on allotting bicycle symbol to Tamil Manila Congress (TMC) would be taken prior to announcing the dates of 2024 general elections.
The representation made by the party for allocation of the symbol is found to be defective. Appropriate decision would be taken once the representation is represented after clearing the defects, counsel for the commission said.
The decision on allotment of symbols would be taken before announcement of the 2024 general election for the parliament and priority would be given on ‘first come, first served’ basis, the commission said.
Recording the submissions, a division bench of Justice R Mahadevan and Justice Mohammed Shaffiq directed the commission to treat the representation made by TMC on priority and take a decision on merit. The court then closed the plea.
