Guwahati: Housing and urban affairs minister Ashok Singhal on Friday told the assembly that a sewage treatment plant is coming up in Guwahati to prevent sewage from going into river channels.
The minister, while replying to the matter of revival of the river channels in the city raised by Asom Gana Parishad MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita during the zero hour in the assembly on Friday, said the state government is putting in all efforts to revive the river channels but coordination from the city dwellers is needed.
He added, “Not only Bharalu, all the river channels have turned into drains over the decades as no action was taken to save them. We must revive the river channels.”
Singhal further said throwing garbage into river channels is another major challenge for the government. “The state government is doing everything for a smooth collection of garbage and removing waste from the channels. Awareness drives are also being carried out.”
He added that 2,000 CCTV cameras will be installed across the city, which will help in catching those who throw garbage into river channels, apart from nabbing criminals. “But people’s co-ordination in reviving the river channels and keeping the city is needed,” he added.
Earlier in the day, the minister, while replying to a question raised by CPM MLA Manoranjan Talukdar, said three garbage transfer stations are under construction in the city and a waste treatment plant is also being set up at the Belor Tol in East Boragaon.
“The transfer stations and the waste treatment plant will help in preventing throwing of garbage into river channels and thereby help in keeping the city clean,” he added.
It is pertinent to mention that the width of the river channels in the city have shrunk over the decades due to rapid encroachment and urbanization.
