Noida: The Noida Authority over this week issued notices to 100 hotels, restaurants and auto-repair shops for disposing of untreated waste directly into stormwater drains or sewer lines.
These commercial establishments have 15 days to install effluent treatment plants and grease traps, failing which the authority will impose a penalty and/or seal them.
The notices were issued after inspections by the public health department across the city. The establishments found violating the norms were located in some of Noida’s busiest commercial hubs – sectors 18, 50, 63, 104 and Hazipur village. Other units that were sent notices are in sectors 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 53, 85 and 80, among others.
Officials said they had received complaints about hotels and eateries discharging greasy wastewater from kitchens without treating it first.
“According to norms set by the UP Pollution Control Board, greasy waste should not be directly discharged into sewers or drains. Instead, wastewater should undergo treatment through ETP and grease traps before being discharged into the main trunk sewer line. Implementing these facilities can significantly alleviate the issue of sewer or drain overflows,” said RP Singh, deputy general manager (jal), Noida Authority.
Similarly, automobile repair shops and service centres were found releasing oil and grease directly, also polluting soil and wastewater.
Noida Authority CEO Lokesh M reiterated that if the commercial units don’t make the changes in 15 days, strict action will be taken against them and heavy penalties will be imposed.
Most of Noida’s wastewater goes into STPs and is then released into drains. About 50-60% of the treated water is utilised in watering trees and plants, fire-fighting, and for construction.
