Haveri: In a heartwarming gesture, the district administration of Davanagere facilitated the wedding of a 24-year-old orphan girl residing at ‘Stree Niketana’. Witnessed by officials and members of Stree Niketana, the wedding ceremony was attended by deputy commissioner MV Venkatesh and ZP CEO Suresh Itnal, SP Uma Prashanth among others.
The bride, Divya M, entered the wedlock with Nagaraj T, a farmer hailing from Muddapur in Chitradurga.
The wedding ceremony was conducted on Stree Niketana premises in Davanagere, according to ‘Mantra Mangalya’ tradition which disallows dowry, and recognises marriages across castes and religions.
Many couples, including former inmates of Stree Niketana who got married earlier attended the event.
Sources said Divya lost her parents when she was a child. Then, the police admitted her to an orphanage. She joined Stree Niketana when she became an adolescent. Later, Divya got an alliance from Nagaraj who wanted to marry an orphan girl. The couple was married on Wednesday.
“It was an emotional event as we performed Kanyadana rituals in place of her parents. More youngsters should come forward to get married to orphan girls. It will help empower women,” said DC MV Venkatesh.
ZP CEO Suresh Itnal said performing Divya’s Kanyadana was a heartwarming moment for them.
Vasanti Uppar, deputy director of the department of women and child development, Davanagere informed that they had followed all due procedures before fixing the alliance. “Nagaraj assured us that he will take good care of Divya. He is also financially well-settled as a farmer,” she claimed.
