Noida: Farmers protesting outside the NTPC and Greater Noida Authority offices for around a month have decided to call off their demonstrations after the govt formed a high-level committee to look into their demands.
The farmers had on Thursday announced they would no longer march to Delhi after the govt’s decision to form the panel, which will submit a report in three months. The protest by these farmers — demanding enhanced compensation for land acquired from them for the NTPC plant in Dadri and 10% developed plots — is different from the faction seeking a law guaranteeing MSP.
Backed by the All India Kisan Sabha, the farmers have been protesting outside the Greater Noida Authority office for the past four weeks.
Rupesh Verma, district president of All India Kisan Sabha, said, “We have been demanding increased compensation and 10% developed plots. On Feb 8, we also organised a protest at Dalit Prerna Sthal, demanding the formation of a high-powered committee to look into our demands. Now, that the government has formed a committee to address farmers’ issue, we have decided to end our protest. We will put our issues and concerns before the committee and ensure they are considered.”
Anup Raghav, a member of the Bharatiya Kisan Parishad that is backing the other group of farmers protesting outside the NTPC office, echoed him. “We have removed our mattresses, utensils, and other kitchen items that we had brought for the protest near the NTPC office,” he added.
SP Goyal, additional chief secretary, had on Wednesday issued a letter, informing that the govt had formed a committee comprising the director of the revenue department, Meerut divisional commissioner and the Noida district magistrate. The panel will submit a report in three months. “Some farmers have been protesting in Noida and Greater Noida over their demands. To address their issues, as per the direction of the UP chief minister, a three-member committee is formed. The Noida Authority and Greater Noida Authority will extend cooperation in this process. The report shall be submitted within three months,” it read.
