Patna: The treatment at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) will be entirely free within a year, said deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary, who also holds the charge of health department. He also instructed the IGIMS officials to increase the beds in the emergency ward of IGIMS.
Choudhary, accompanied by health department additional chief secretary Pratyaya Amrit, on Friday inspected various ongoing construction works on the IGIMS campus, including the upcoming 200-bed eye hospital under the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO).This eye hospital is expected to be inaugurated soon.
Talking to mediapersons, Choudhary said complaints are common about bed crunch in the emergency ward of IGIMS, which at present has 95 beds and is not able to tackle the pressure. He praised chief minister Nitish Kumar for taking steps to provide free medicines at IGIMS and said, “By next financial year, entire treatment will be made free of cost.”
Amrit said a concrete decision would be taken within a week regarding expansion of the emergency ward. “We will hold a review meeting in this regard and solve the issue at the earliest. It is a common concern for us,” said Amrit.
Talking about the upcoming RIO, which will be equipped with modern equipment for treating eye problems, Amrit said it is expected to be inaugurated by March-end. He further said apart from the 200-bed eye hospital, instructions were also given for expediting other ongoing projects.
Sources said this eye hospital, being constructed at the cost of over Rs 162 crore, will have 11 operation theatres and world class modern equipment. In the first phase, OPD and emergency service will be started.
IGIMS superintendent Dr Manish Mandal said presently they have a total of 1,170 beds in the hospital and additional 2,000 beds are to be added. There are two projects — a 500-bed hospital and another 1200-bed hospital. Dr Mandal said while the 500-bed hospital is under litigation, another 1200-bed hospital is expected to get ready by 2025.
