Margao: The scheduled tribes organisations of Goa have pinned their hopes on the assurance made by Union home minister Amit Shah to a delegation led by chief minister Pramod Sawant that reservation of assembly seats for the STs would be done before the 2027 assembly elections.
The BJP ST morcha said that they had “full faith” in Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi that their long-pending demand would be fulfilled as assured.
BJP ST morcha president Prabhakar Gaonkar, vice president Anthony Barbosa and others, addressing a press briefing at the party’s South Goa office, said they were “happy” with Shah’s assurance and so were other ST organisations.
Mission Political Reservation for Scheduled Tribes of Goa, at a press briefing held separately, attributed the “positive development” to the success of their agitation held in Panaji earlier this month.
“The present development has happened in the backdrop of the morcha taken to Goa assembly on Feb 4 and subsequent discussions held in the assembly on Feb 10,” said president of Mission Political Reservation John Fernandes.
The Mission, however, reiterated its demand that the delimitation commission be constituted before the declaration of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Shah has assured the delegation that the proposal seeking the formation of a delimitation commission to reserve assembly seats for STs of Goa would be placed before the Union cabinet on Feb 28.
Spokesperson of the Mission, Govind Shirodkar, said the unity displayed by various factions of the ST movement has fuelled their optimism about a successful outcome.
