KOLKATA: Blaming BJP for the law and order issues in Sandeshkhali, Trinamool on Friday said they would leave it to the Calcutta High Court’s wisdom to decide whether the unrest had been instigated to malign an elected state govt. The party also appealed to the HC to check if leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari had followed the HC’s guidelines when he was allowed to visit the troubled areas.
Senior minister Chandrima Bhattacharya told reporters: “Calcutta High Court had granted permission to the leader of opposition to visit Sandeshkhali. But… the court had also instructed him not to make any provocative comments or act in a manner that can hurt the sentiments of other communities. But the LOP uttered the word ‘Khalistani’ and thus disobeyed the court order. The LOP says he will go to the HC whenever he faces an obstacle. He projects the HC in a manner that he can do whatever he wants with court orders. We have faith in the judiciary and we believe the honourable court is taking note of this as well.”
Commenting on lifting of prohibitory orders, Bhattacharya said: “The judge must be aware of the law and whether such orders can be lifted or not. He must have done it knowingly as he is extremely experienced. He was made the additional solicitor general by BJP govt. We are neither questioning his experience nor the order but we want to say apart from passing orders, the HC should also neutrally assess whether their orders are being flouted by anyone.”
“We appeal to the court to look at all aspects and see if something is being fabricated to malign the elected govt. Some videos about multiple conspiracies have surfaced and I believe they must have come under judicial notice as well. We request the court to take note of that judicial notice as well. Calcutta High Court is an honourable court of law and I believe it doesn’t want the govt to be unnecessarily maligned,” she said.
The minister added: “The law should be equal for all and I am certain the HC always does it and will continue to do the same.”
Minister Shashi Panja added that the immunity that was granted to Adhikari had led to ‘verbal terrorism’.
Meanwhile, TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee shared a two-minute video on X that showed various instances of Adhikari hurling expletives and using communal slurs to multiple persons including cops and political leaders since 2021. “Watch this 2-minute video to witness the venom the BJP is injecting into Bengal. Despite numerous pleas this person remains under the protection of the High Court. Who is accountable for spreading such hatred and bigotry and what compels the Calcutta HC to shield him,” asked the post on X.
