34 New Notified Area Councils (NACs) and 5 Municipalities Created in Odisha | Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

Bhubaneswar: Ahead of the assembly election, govt on Saturday created 34 new Notified Area Councils (NACs) to run civic body administration in those places and upgraded five NACs into municipalities. The new NACs have been created in 20 districts.
The five NACs that have been upgraded into municipalities are Boudhgarh in Boudh, Karanjia in Mayurbhanj, Kantabanji in Balangir, Chhatrapur and Aska in Ganjam districts.Considering the peoples’ demand, population increase, boost to economic development, the new NACs have been created. Chief minister Naveen Patnaik expressed hope that the newly created NACs will work for overall development in the respective area, said a government communication. With the upgrading of five municipalities and creation of 34 NACs, the state now has 149 urban bodies out of which five are municipal corporations.
The total number of municipalities has gone up to 53 and the total NACs to 91. The districts where new NACs will come up are two each in Angul, Balasore, Bargarh, Balangir, Ganjam, Khurda districts and one each in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput, Nuapada, Subarnapur, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal and Boudh. Four NACs each have been created in Jajpur (Binjharpur, Panikoili, Jarka and Chandikhol), in Cuttack (Salepur, Badamba, Narasinghpur, Niali) and three NACs have been created in Rayagada district.
Senior BJP leader KV Singhdeo said before creation or upgradation of new civic body, there is a due procedure. “It has to be placed in the cabinet and passed in the assembly. The governor then accords the approval. But without any due procedure, 34 NACs have been created keeping in view the ensuing election,” he said.
He said according to Odisha municipal Act, 1950, and Odisha Municipal Corporation Act, 2003, public hearing in that particular area is required before announcing new urban bodies.
Ganjam ULBs
The number of urban local bodies (ULB) in Ganjam district went up to 19, highest in the state, after the state government announced two new Notified Area Councils (NACs) and upgraded two NACs to municipalities on Saturday.
The new NACs in the district will be Sheragada and Kukudakhandi, while two new municipalities are Aska and Chhatrapur. With these, the total number of NACs in the district will be 15, total municipalities three and one corporation — Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC).
