NEW DELHI: Four men posing as policemen allegedly made off with jewellery worth more than Rs 39 lakh at central Delhi’s DBG Road. The victim, identified as Kamal Chaudhary, lives in Regarpura. The incident occurred at 5 pm on Feb 22 while he was travelling by an autorickshaw from Karol Bagh to Kucha Mahajani in Chandni Chowk.
“I was approaching New Rohtak Road, when two men on a motorcycle approached the autorickshaw and stopped it.They claimed to be from Delhi Police‘s Crime Branch. The duo said that they were conducting checks due to the farmers’ protest. They told us that they wanted to check whether we were carrying drugs,” Chaudhary claimed.
The victim further stated that one of the men showed them an identity card mentioning Delhi Police. Their two accomplices came from behind. One of the accused demanded the driver exit the vehicle. As Chaudhary prepared to comply, two men entered the autorickshaw and asked him to show them his bag. “I told them that if they wished to inspect my belongings, they should escort me to the police station. This angered them and they accused me of being ‘too smart’ before proceeding to manhandle me,” the victim added.
One of the men snatched the bag and passed it to his accomplice. All the four men then fled on two motorcycles. They took the wrong way on the road and headed towards Liberty Cinema. Two of them wore helmets.
Police have registered a case and formed several teams to crack it. The accused have been booked for cheating and forgery. So far, no arrests have been made. “We are scanning CCTV footage from the scene and surrounding areas to determine the sequence of events and identify the routes used by the suspects to escape,” police said, adding that they have identified a few suspects and the case would be solved soon.
