Mumbai: Malad brothers booked for abusing woman and hitting old dog | Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Dindoshi police has booked two Malad (east) based brothers for hitting an old, ailing dog in their building complex, and later abusing a woman feeder who had gone to the police station to complain against them.
Local animal activist Madhu Chanda told TOI: “Animal feeder, Manisha Toprani, who resides in Upper Govind Nagar in Malad (east), takes care of an old dog who suffers from arthritis at Santsang Bharti housing complex. However, two brothers from the same complex recently hit this ailing dog with a stick, leading to head injury. The brothers reasoned that their pet dog was earlier attacked by some of the local community dogs in that area; and so they were hitting back at them.”
Chanda added that while all the other local dogs had run away on seeing the brothers aggressively come towards them, the old dog with arthritis could not run fast, and so he was hit on the head, although he is a docile animal. She along with the other feeder, Toprani, then went to Dindoshi police station to lodge a complaint against the brothers, who also arrived at the police station and reportedly verbally abused the women, which thereby insulted their modesty.
Animal activist Harshwardhan Chaudhary, who intervened in this matter, said: “I spoke to a senior official at Dindoshi police station, since there was a delay of over 24 hours in lodging an FIR. Since the accused brothers had angrily abused the women feeders inside the police station in front of the duty officer, it did call for an FIR. The cops took note of our reasoning, and the complaint was lodged.”
The FIR is lodged against Parag Parmar and Chirag Parmar under IPC sections 504, 506 and 509 for verbally abusing and threatening the woman feeder, besides section 11 (1)(a) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
Chanda added: “We thank Harshwardhan Chaudhary for legally helping us in this matter. The accused brothers had not only hit the old dog, but also thrown out his food and makeshift bed, which is rather cruel. They showed no remorse and further made derogatory remarks.”
The activists have also urged the law enforcers to ensure that further awareness is raised in the public that it is a crime to physically harm any animal, under the PCA Act, 1960. There is also a demand to revise this Act so as to make more stringent punishment against those who hurt animals.
